A mother’s love for her children never waver’s. She may not be the smartest, or always do the right things. She may not even wear fancy clothes, but she shows up for her children time again and time again in unexpected ways. Her care and concern is always there, even when her child is fully grown. It is a heart and soul connection that transcends the test of time. When we think of a well known mother, many images pop up in our minds. However Virgin Mary with the Christ child is an event much talked about and included in all four Gospels. Consequently it is a very dear and common subject in art. It symbolizes the miracle of the birth of Christ through a virgin and a mother’s love till death on the cross.

This contemporary carving is made from olive wood and depicts a mother’s immense love for her child. The “Piccirillo Handicraft Center”, in the city of Bethlehem, is a project carried out by the John Paul II Foundation together with the Custody of the Holy Land in 2014 to meet the economic and social needs of the city’s population, especially those with special needs and disabilities.
