The olive tree has been a symbol of peace in the Middle East and the world for thousands of years. We are said to “extend an olive branch” when we make an effort to reconcile with an enemy.
The olive tree has been an integral part of the Palestinian landscape and Arab folk traditions for generation upon generation. Using the wood for sculptures and other souvenirs the trees generate a much needed income. They also provide a vital source of food, oil, soap and other products for the people of the land.
Olive trees have particular spiritual significance for many faith traditions. In the biblical story of the flood the dove that returned to Noah carried an olive branch. This forecasted the end of the flood, restoration of the earth and second chance for human kind. Scripture continually refers to the olive tree as a notable emblem of blessing, prosperity, beauty and nurture. Christian belief is that the Holy Spirit brings the peace of God to all of us. Therefore from the first century onwards, they have often represented the Holy Spirit as a dove holding an olive branch. Paul, in his letter to the Romans, uses the olive tree as a teaching tool to encourage the people of Israel, the olive tree, to accept all people, the new graft, as part of the family of God through faith in Jesus.
The beautiful olive trees that cover the Holy Land are a constant reminder that:
When we trust in God’s love, we flourish like an olive tree in the house of God. (Psalm 52:8)
